faq's

1. Why should I invest in a smoke alarm now?

Fires can happen at any time, and the lack of warning can be fatal. A working smoke alarm can reduce your risk of dying in a fire by up to 50%. For a modest investment, you're protecting your loved ones and property from catastrophic loss.

2. How loud is the alarm?

The alarm emits a loud, 85-decibel warning signal—enough to wake sleeping individuals and alert everyone in the vicinity to danger.

3. How is it powered?

The unit is 100% battery-powered, meaning no wiring is required. It’s perfect for homes, apartments, or rental properties where installing wired systems might not be feasible.

4. How do battery-operated smoke alarms work?

Battery-operated smoke alarms use sensors to detect smoke particles in the air. When
smoke is detected, the alarm emits a loud sound to alert occupants of a potential fire. They operate independently and don’t require wiring to a power source.

5. How long do the batteries last?

This model comes with long-lasting batteries, designed to power the alarm for extended periods. We recommend testing the alarm monthly and replacing the batteries when you hear a low-battery warning chirp.

6. Is the installation really that easy?

Yes! This smoke alarm is engineered for quick, tool-free self-installation. Most users can install it in under 10 minutes using the included mounting kit and clear instructions.

7. Do I need an electrician to install a battery-operated smoke alarm?

No. Battery-operated alarms are designed for easy DIY installation. Just follow the
instructions included with your unit and use the mounting hardware provided.

8. Where should I install the smoke alarm?

Install at least one alarm on each floor of your home, and place them:

  • Inside each bedroom
  • Outside all sleeping areas
  • In living areas and hallways

Avoid installing near vents, windows, or cooking appliances where airflow or smoke may trigger false alarms.

9. Are battery-operated alarms as safe as hardwired ones?

Yes, as long as they are properly installed, tested monthly, and maintained with fresh
batteries. For extra safety, consider using interconnected alarms (available in some battery-powered models) that alert throughout the home.

10. Why is photoelectric technology preferred for home safety?

Photoelectric sensors are better at detecting slow-burning, smoldering fires—common in homes. These types of fires can produce dangerous smoke well before flames are visible, making early detection critical for safe evacuation.

11. How long do battery-operated smoke alarms last?

All smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years. Check the manufacturer’s label for the exact expiration date.

12. What should I do if my smoke alarm goes off when there's no fire?

This could be due to steam, cooking smoke, or dust. Try relocating the alarm farther from kitchens or bathrooms. Clean the alarm using a vacuum to remove dust buildup.

13. What is a “test” button and how often should I use it?

The test button simulates smoke to ensure the alarm and batteries are working properly. Press it once a month to confirm functionality.

14. Can I silence a false alarm?

Smoke alarms have a “hush” or “silence” button that temporarily quiets the alarm. However, if the alarm continues to go off, check the area to confirm there is no real fire.

15. What maintenance is required?

Minimal maintenance is needed:

  • Test regularly using the built-in test button
  • Replace batteries when the low battery warning chirp sounds
  • Vacuum the alarm occasionally to remove dust buildup
  • Replace the entire unit after 10 years, as recommended by safety standards
16. Are there smoke alarms with 10-year batteries?

Yes, some models come with sealed lithium batteries that last up to 10 years. These alarms do not require battery replacement during their lifespan and must be replaced entirely after 10 years.

17. What happens if I remove the battery to stop a false alarm?

Never remove the battery without replacing it immediately. Doing so disables the alarm and leaves your home unprotected.

18. Will the alarm fit in with my home décor?

Yes! The device features a sleek and compact design that complements modern interiors without being obtrusive. It's a discreet yet powerful safety upgrade.

19. Can I use this smoke alarm in a rental property?

Yes, it’s ideal for rental units because it doesn’t require hardwiring. It’s also easy to remove and reinstall, making it a flexible solution for tenants and landlords alike.

20. Is this alarm suitable for South African homes?

Absolutely. Given the high rate of residential fires in South Africa—many of which occur in homes without functioning smoke alarms—this device offers a much-needed layer of protection for families and tenants alike.

Recommended locations for alarms

  1. Your alarm is suitable for the landing, hallway, bedroom, living room and dining room. Instant it in the stairway and in every floor.
  2. Smoke, heat and burning things will spread horizontally after rising to the ceiling, so instant the alarm in the middle of the ceiling of an ordinary structured house.
  3. Smoke, heat and burning things will spread horizontally after rising to the ceiling, so instant the alarm in the middle of the ceiling of an ordinary structured house.
  4. If the length of the room or the hall is beyond 30 foot, you need instant several! alarms in the hall.
  5. When the ceiling is slanting, the alarm needs to be installed minimum 50cm away from the highest ceiling point in the room (see the diagram 2).

Locations to avoid

  1. Near appliances or areas where normal combustion regularly occurs (kitchens, near cookers, hot water heaters etc). Use specialized smoke alarms with unwanted alarm control for these areas.
  2. In areas with high humidity, like bathrooms or areas near dishwashers or washing machines, instan at least 10 feet away from these areas.
  3. Near air returns or heating and cooling supply vents, instant at least 3 feet away from these areas. The air could blow smoke away from the detector, interrupting its alarm.
  4. In rooms where temperature may fall below OºC or rise above 40ºC.

Operation and testing

Testing

Test by pushing the test button on the cover. This will sound the alarm if the electronic circuitry, alarm, and battery are working. If no alarm sounds, the unit has defective batteries or other failures.

DO NOT use an open flame to test your alarm, you could damage !he alarm or ignite combustible materials and start a structure fire.

NOTE: WEEKLY TESTING IS REQUIRED
Normal Condition

The red LED on the front should flash every 32 seconds to show that the alarm is active.

Alarm Condition

When the alarm senses products of combustion and goes into alarm, the red LED will flash one flash per second. The flashing LED and pulsating alarm will continue until the air is cleared.

Low Power Pack Condition

IMPORTANT: Your smoke alarm requires the power pack to have sufficient capacity of power to operate correctly. Should your smoke alarm entera low power pack condition, the unit will emit an audible chirp once every 32 seconds. When this occurs, you must replace the battery immediately. Your smoke alarm will continue to wam of this low power pack condition for at least 30 days, however, failure to change the battery after this time would mean your smoke alarm may have insufficient power to alert you in a real fire situation.

When the alarm is removed from the mounting plate the power pack will automatically deactivate and the low power warning chirp should stop, allowing you to dispose of the alarm.

Fault indication

The alarm chirp occurs every 32 seconds.
